You asked

I would like to request information under the Freedom of Information Act. Please could you provide the following information:

  1. From 10th July 2020 to the present (or as present as current statistics reveal), how many dementia-related deaths were recorded where COVID-19 was not directly attributed as the cause of death?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Analysis showing the number of deaths where dementia was the underlying cause and COVID-19 was recorded as a contributory factor are not currently available. 2020 mortality data are currently provisional and full cause of death information will not be available until July 2021 via our Deaths Registered Series and NOMIS. These publications only provide deaths by underlying cause. In order to provide you with the exact information you have requested, we would need to produce a bespoke table for you.

Special extracts and bespoke tabulations of 2020 mortality data for England and Wales will be available to order in July 2021 (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

You might also be interested in our Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales publication which reports numbers of deaths involving COVID-19 by main pre-existing condition, for March to June 2020. We put this publication on hold when the number of deaths involving COVID-19 fell in Summer 2020, but due to the subsequent increase in deaths, we are producing an update of this report to include data for July 2020 onwards.

We have continued to publish monthly mortality analysis for July to December 2020 but at present this doesn't include the same level of detail. This will be updated to include January 2021 data on 25th February 2021.
