You asked

I am writing to request the latest statistics which give the total number of:

All registered judges in England and Wales currently active in the judiciary, All registered lawyers prosecuting for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Thank you for your request.

Our estimates of the number of people employed by occupation in the UK are produced from the Annual Population Survey (APS) and are published on Nomis, here:

https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/datasets/aps168/reports/employment-by-occupation?compare=K02000001

Estimates are provided for the 12-month period January to December 2004 through to October 2019 to September 2020, which is the latest period for which APS estimates are currently available.

Occupation estimates from the APS are based on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC).  Respondents to the survey give their job title and a brief description of their job and this is then assigned to the appropriate SOC code.  Based on your request, the nearest matches are SOC 2412 (Barristers and Judges) and SOC 2413 (Solicitors).  The APS can provide estimates for the number of people employed in these two occupation groups but, unfortunately, no further detail is available.

It is, therefore, not possible to ascertain from the APS whether a judge is registered and currently active in the judiciary or whether a solicitor is registered and prosecuting for the CPS (and, for confidentiality reasons, we would not be able to provide APS estimates relating to a single employer).  For the former, information is available from the Courts and Tribunals Judiciary (https://www.judiciary.uk/) and, for the latter, information may be available from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (https://www.sra.org.uk/) or the Crown Prosecution Service (https://www.cps.gov.uk/).
