Theft of registered vehicles and burglaries in the UK

You asked

I require the following information for an insurance project that I am currently investigating:

  1. How many UK registered vehicle owners have had 1 vehicle stolen in the last 10 years?
  2. How many UK registered vehicle owners have had 2 vehicles stolen in the last 10 years?
  3. The total number of UK registered vehicle owners in the last 10 years

  4. How many UK registered homeowners have claimed for theft from burglaries once in the last 10 years?

  5. How many UK registered homeowners have claimed for theft from burglaries twice in the last 10 years?
  6. Total number of UK registered home owners in the last 10 years.

Thank you for your enquiry.  

We are responsible for collating and publishing statistics for England and Wales. Scottish Government are responsible for publishing crime statistics for Scotland. The Police Service for Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency are responsible for publishing crime statistics for Northern Ireland. 

We do not hold information on insurance claims for either vehicle thefts or burglaries. The two main sources of official statistics we hold are Police Recorded Crime, and data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) . 

Police Recorded Crime covers crimes recorded by the 43 police forces in England and Wales (as well as the British Transport Police).  

The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is a face-to-face victim survey in which people are asked about their experiences of crime in the previous 12 months.  

Both sources provide data in relation to vehicle thefts and burglaries but not on insurance claims directly. The most up to date tables are found here: Crime in England and Wales: Appendix tables - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk). For CSEW data see table A1 and for police record crime data see table A4a.  

Please be advised that both sources of data are not specifically for registered vehicle or home owners. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) may have further information on the number of registered vehicle owners in the UK. They can be contacted at: foi@dvla.gov.uk
