Deaths from the COVID-19 vaccine by age, sex and brand

You asked

​Please supply information on the total number of COVID-19 vaccination deaths from when the vaccine programme began to date to. The specific request follows:

  1. Report the total number of people who have died from the COVID-19 vaccination. This include all vaccine brands, all age and gender groups.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry requesting deaths involving the COVID-19 vaccination.

The number of deaths in England and Wales where adverse reaction to the vaccine was mentioned on the death certificate can be found in Table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset. There are currently 4 deaths registered with the aligning ICD-10 codes for this (U12.9). We do not hold this data disaggregated by brand of vaccination. The latest data available is August 2021.

We are unable to offer any further disaggregation of this data by age and sex, due to the small numbers involved. This is consistent with the disclosure control methodology used for deaths. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) which renders it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individual businesses or persons can be identified, we find that Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. Section 44 is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied
