COVD-19 deaths by single year of age

We hold the following analysis, which provides deaths due to and involving COVID-19 by single year of age: Single year of age and average age of death of people whose death was due to or involved COVID-19 - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk). We use the term "due to" when COVID-19 is the underlying cause of death and "involving" where COVID-19 is either a contributory cause or the underlying cause of death. This provides the requested information for questions 1 and 2.

COVID-19 deaths with no pre-existing conditions

We hold the following analysis for 2020 and 2021: Pre-existing conditions of people who died due to COVID-19, England and Wales - Office for National Statistics. In this publication we use broad age groups of 0-64 and 65 and over.

Table 4 shows COVID-19 deaths with no pre-existing conditions for each quarter.

If you would like this information broken down further, we can create a custom output. Special extracts of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

COVID-19 deaths by vaccination status

We have published weekly counts of deaths, population and age-standardised mortality rates by vaccination status in our most recent publication on this topic, "Deaths involving COVID-19 by Vaccination Status, England: deaths occurring between 2 January and 31 October 2021". We use 21 days after vaccination as this is when the vaccine is deemed to be effective. Please note this publication does not include deaths attributed to an adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Table 5 of this publication shows monthly age-standardised mortality rates by age-group and vaccination status for deaths involving COVID-19 from January to October 2021.

The data are for England only, as vaccinations data for Wales is not yet available to be linked to the mortality dataset and the Public Health Data Asset covers England only.

Our next publication will include data for November and December which will be published in February 2022.

We do not hold further information regarding deaths due to COVID-19 by specific age group, pre-existing conditions and vaccination status. To fulfil this request, we would need use complex data linkage of mortality data to National Immunisation Management System (NIMS) data and a high level of statistical skill and judgement to create information. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. Therefore, the information for questions 4, 5, and 6 are unfortunately not held.
