We said

Thank you for your request.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

Unfortunately, we do not hold estimates of suicide by race for the precise time period you are requesting.

However, ONS has published estimates in the following related publications:

  1. Adjusted incidence rate ratios for suicide by sociodemographic characteristic in the period 2011 to 2021 including ethnicity can be found in the release: Sociodemographic inequalities in suicides in England and Wales: 2011 to 2021. Electronic data of the incidence rate ratios can be found in the data table accompanying the release. This release also includes the number of deaths by ethnic group, but this is only for people who responded to the 2011 Census

  2. Age -standardised rates for three year aggregated periods between 2012-14 and 2017-19 can be found in the data table accompany the release Mortality from leading causes of death by ethnic group, England and Wales: 2012 to 2019.
