Thank you for your request.

Our 'gold standard' source of information for ethnic group by religious affiliation remains the 2011 Census. These data are freely available at national and subnational level on the Nomis website.

The Ethnic group by religion (LC2201EW) table provides a breakdown of the high-level five ethnic groups by religious affiliation in England and Wales at the national and subnational level.

The Ethnic Group by Religion (DC2201EW) table has a detailed breakdown of the population in England and Wales for the 18 and ethnic groups by religious affiliation at the national and subnational level.

These datasets classify the usual resident population of England and Wales as at census day, 27 March, 2011, by ethnic group by religion.

A tick-box for the 'Roma' ethnic group, within the high-level "White" category was included as a response option for the first time in the 2021 Census. We aim to release the first results for Census 2021 data on the population of England and Wales in early summer 2022, and to publish all other main Census 2021 data within two years of census. Please see our latest release plans for 2021 Census data on the following page: here.
