Thank you for your request.

The raw data we hold on hospital episodes is obtained from the Hospital Episode Statistics published by NHS Digital. We use this data to determine pre-existing conditions and general health of individuals. Our analysis using this data can be found on our Coronavirus (COVID-19) latest insights page.

However, in order to provide the requested analysis, we would need to use a high level of statistical skill and judgement to create new information. This would involve working with medical professionals to create a list of ICD-10 codes for each condition. We'd also need to use statistical judgement to identify spells of admission. For example, we'd need to distinguish if some records are from the same spell of admission, or two separate admissions, as someone could be admitted for a heart failure, and then move to another department, creating two entries of data for one individual.

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), public authorities are not obliged to create new information to respond to FOI requests. Therefore, owing to the level of work involved in creating this information, this information is not held.

As this data were collected by NHS Digital, they may be better placed to assist with you request. They can be contacted on enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk or by telephone 0300 303 5678.
