You asked
What is the population of Birmingham and what are the number of different religions? Also is the population increased since the last census what is the reason for this rise?
We said
Thank you for your enquiry.
On 28 June 2022 we published the first results from Census 2021 on the population and housing in England and Wales that took place 21 March 2021. Links to all the data and bulletins published are available via the following link: https://www.ons.gov.uk/releases/initialfindingsfromthe2021censusinenglandandwales
To find data for Birmingham, you can see an overview of how it has changed since 2011 via the following link: https://www.ons.gov.uk/visualisations/censuspopulationchange
We plan to release eight 2021 Census topic summaries in the following order:
- Demography and migration
- Ethnic group, national identity, language, and religion
- UK armed forces veterans
- Housing
- Labour market and travel to work
- Sexual orientation and gender identity
- Education
- Health, disability, and unpaid care
The first of these (demography and migration) is scheduled for release during the autumn. Statistics on religion should hopefully be available before the end of the year. For an indication of timescales for later releases, including the topic summaries, area profiles and phase 2 and 3 releases, please see our Release plans page.
Populations change because of births, deaths, and migration (both internal and external). It is not always possible to know more specifically the reason for this from our data sources.
