We said

Thank you for your request regarding excess deaths.

Excess deaths

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from death certificates at death registration.

We do publish the following publication, Excess deaths in England and Wales, which is updated annually, with all-cause excess deaths calculated between March 2020 to December 2022, by sex and five-year age groups.

We can create the requested breakdowns for you via our bespoke services route. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). To discuss a bespoke request further, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, even if only accessible on payment, Section 21(2)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.

Miscarriages

Unfortunately, we only hold data on live births, still births and infant deaths, but not on miscarriages.

NHS Digital may be better placed to answer your enquiry. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk, and by telephone at +44 (0) 300 303 5678.
