I would like to request the total deaths by blood clot/myocarditis/cardiac arrest. I am interested in all age groups for as long a period as possible, preferably 10 to 20 years.

The mortality data that we publish are derived from the formal process of death registration. 

All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2021 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework. 

We use the following ICD-10 codes:  

Acute myocarditis 

  • I40.0 - Infective myocarditis and Septic myocarditis 

  • I40.1 - Isolated myocarditis 

  • I40.8 - Other acute myocarditis 

  • I41 0 Myocarditis in diseases classified elsewhere 

Pulmonary embolism and thrombosis 

  • I26 - Pulmonary embolism  

  • I80.1 - Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of femoral vein 

  • I80.3 Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of the lower extremities, unspecified 

  • I80.9 Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of unspecified site 

However, dependant on your specification, there are more codes available. 

Cardiac arrest 

  • I46 - Cardiac arrest 

  • I46.1 - Sudden cardiac death  

  • I49.9 - Cardiac arrhythmia (unspecified)  

  • R96 - Sudden adult/arrhythmic death

2013 to 2021

Annual mortality data by cause from 2013-2021 is available as part of our explorable dataset on our NOMIS webservice. Please see the following instructions to use this service:

  • Select period - 2013 to 2021 

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority) 

  • Select age - All ages or 5-year age bands 

  • Select gender - Total or Male/Female 

  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example 

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available) (I40 and I41) 

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example) 

Please note, NOMIS only provides the underlying cause of death and does not provide data for secondary cause or contributory mentions.  

For more historic data, you can search by underlying cause and ICD-10 code in our 21st century mortality which holds data from 2001 to 2021.
