You asked

Please provide data regarding rates of unemployment by either country of origin or nationality.

I am aware of the EMP06 dataset, however the data is not comprehensive in that it groups data by larger regions.

Is it possible I could acquire access to the data included in EMP06 with rates for each country specified? I have been informed this would be available via the LFS microdata.

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we do not publish a more detailed country breakdown of the EMP06 or A12 datasets from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). However, more detailed information is available from the Annual Population Survey (APS) via the Nomis website. This can be accessed as follows:

1) On the Nomis homepage, select "Query data" under "Data Downloads".

2) Select "Annual Population Survey/Labour Force Survey", then select "Current" and then choose "annual population survey - regional - country of birth (Dec 2007 to Mar 2020)" or "annual population survey - regional - nationality (Dec 2007 to Mar 2020)".

3) On the next page you can create your data extract by making appropriate selections from the "Geography", "Date", "Country Of Birth" or "Nationality", "Economic Activity", "Percent" and "Sex" categories.

4) The "Country Of Birth" or "Nationality" category allows you to select from a list of geographic regions, plus those countries which have the largest contribution to the UK labour market.

5) Once you've made your selections you can download the data in the format of your choice.

If the data available on Nomis is not detailed enough for your needs then the breakdown you require could be created from the LFS or APS microdata as part of our bespoke service. Such a service would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs where appropriate. If you would like to enquire about obtaining these estimates, please contact the customer services team of ONS's Social Surveys Division at socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk.

Another route would be to access the anonymised LFS/APS datasets at the UK Data Service if you are able to run your own analysis. Data can be downloaded free of charge for non-commercial purposes but if charges are applicable, you will be notified during the ordering process. Details of how to access the data can be found here: http://ukdataservice.ac.uk/get-data/how-to-access.aspx.
