Thank you for your request.

Please see the following publication: Marriages in England and Wales. Table 14 of this publication provides data by region. Table 10 provides marriages by month. Data is available for the years 2010 – 2017. This information is also available on our interactive webservice NOMIS, which can be accessed via the following link: NOMIS webservice.

If these publications do not meet your needs, the information you have requested may be available to commission as bespoke analysis. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.

Unfortunately, 2017 is the latest data we have available. Marriage statistics are published two years in arrears. This is a result of delays with registrations and in receiving and collating the data from the various registry offices. Details of civil marriage registrations are collected promptly, as they are recorded on an electronic system. However, the recording of religious marriages is still paper-based and therefore take longer for us to collect. Delays can also be due to closure of churches and changes in the clergy. We wait 2 years to receive as many religious marriage registration records as possible in order to balance timeliness against completeness of the data. Therefore, we would be unable to provide you with marriage data in the month of December for 2018 and 2019.
