You asked

Could you please provide me with where possible:

  1. How many homicides committed within the years (financial) 2017-2019 have remained unsolved to date?
  2. How many of these unsolved homicides has/had an initial suspect broken down by the ethnicity of white and black? (for example, how many initial suspects were identified as being black and how many were identified as being white?)

Thank you for your request.

Table 20 within our appendix tables (published alongside the Homicide in England and Wales: year ending March 2019 release) provides information on homicide outcomes as at 5 December 2019. These figures are subject to revision as cases are dealt with by the police and by the courts, or as further information becomes available.

Appendix table 27 provides details on the ethnic appearance of the victim and principal suspect convicted of homicide. This is based on combined data from the year ending March 2017 to the year ending March 2019.

Homicide cases are often complex and can take time to reach an outcome in court. The case outcomes for suspects of homicides recorded each year will change as cases progress through the criminal justice system and more information becomes available. For example, a case reported to the police in one year may not appear with an outcome after investigation until the following year.

Data regarding homicides is sourced from the Homicide Index, which is held and collated by the Home Office. They may be able to assist you further with your request. They can be contacted at the following email address: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.
