FOI Ref: FOI/2022/4434

You asked

Please could you tell me the number of deaths registered by the Office of National Statistics in regard to and associated with the roll out of the COVID-19 vaccinations (all brands), in those that have received at least one dose. Start date 08/12/2020, until present date (or latest you have).

Could you also please tell me if this includes stillbirths and miscarriages. If it does not, could you please also give me this information for the same time period

We said

Thank you for your request.

We hold the following analysis which provides Age-standardised mortality rates for deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19), non-COVID-19 deaths and all deaths by vaccination status, broken down by age group: Deaths by vaccination status, England - Office for National Statistics.

The data are for England only, as vaccinations data for Wales is not yet available to be linked to the mortality dataset and the Public Health Data Asset (the source of this information) covers England only.

This is the latest data available with an updated publication due for release in late 2022. The next publication date will be announced on our Release Calendar.

Please note this data does not include deaths attributed to adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination.

Deaths which include adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination as either the underlying cause or contributory mention are recorded in Table 12 of our following link to our monthly mortality analysis: Monthly Mortality Analysis.

Stillbirths

This data does not include Stillbirths, stillbirths are received as part of the births dataset and are not part of the death registration process.

While we hold both stillbirth and COVID-19 vaccination data separately, in order to create this information, we would be required to link our raw stillbirths data with raw vaccination data, quality assure the linked dataset to check it is fit for purpose to produce robust statistics, and then conduct statistical analysis to produce the requested information. This process would require a high level of statistical skill and judgement, involving the use of statistical expertise and experience to change the raw information held into the requested analysis. Public authorities are not obligated to create new information in order to answer FOI requests. This information therefore is not held for FOI purposes.

However, we are conducting a programme of statistical work investigating the risk factors associated with pregnancy outcomes and COVID-19 infection, taking vaccination status into account. The first experimental statistics from that work have now been released: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/bulletins/coronaviruscovid19hospitaladmissionsbyvaccinationandpregnancystatusengland/8december2020to31august2021.

This release focused on hospitalisation of the mother during pregnancy as the outcome, rather than stillbirth; the exact outputs and statistics which will be developed and released through the remainder of the programme, and therefore exactly which datasets will be linked to produce them, are yet to be confirmed.

However, our latest analysis of stillbirths is available in Births in England and Wales.

For further information on stillbirths or deaths by vaccination status please contact the HALE Customer Services team at Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Miscarriages

We do not hold data on miscarriages, this data is held by NHS digital who would be better placed to answer your enquiry. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk, and by telephone at 0300 303 5678.
