You asked

I would like the death rate by age for the whole population (ideally for every age but if it needs to be grouped that's fine too).

Then also the death rate by age for teachers and education professionals specifically. Again ideally for every age but if it's grouped into age groups that's fine).

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Deaths involving COVID-19 for the entire population of England and Wales by five year age group are available in Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales.

Age standardised mortality rates of death involving the coronavirus (COVID-19) for teaching and educational professionals aged 20 to 64 years are available via the following publication: Coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths by occupation in England and Wales. The latest release includes deaths registered between 9March and 28 December 2020, and also includes rates of death involving COVID-19 for all those in the population aged 20 to 64 years, for comparison purposes. The rates reported in this release have been adjusted to allow valid comparisons between occupations with different age structures. Please also see the dataset accompanying this publication: Coronavirus related deaths by occupation in England and Wales dataset.

Please also see the following ad hoc dataset: Numbers of death involving COVID-19 for teaching and educational professionals by age. This publication provides data for deaths registered in England and Wales between 9 March and 28 December 2020. This publication provides deaths by 4-year age band for teachers between 20 and 64.

In order to provide age-specific rates of deaths involving COVID-19 for teaching and educational professionals, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

Please note, deaths involving COVID-19 include those where the coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate as the underlying cause of death, or a factor that contributed to the death. Analysis based on occupation does not prove conclusively that the observed rates of death are necessarily caused by differences in occupational exposure to COVID-19.
