You asked

How many residential properties are recorded as empty in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland?

We said

Thank you for your request.

Residential properties recorded as empty:

At the ONS, we do not hold statistics on the number of residential properties recorded as empty.

However, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (DLUHC) publishes annual statistics on the number of vacant dwellings for England on their Live tables on dwelling stock (including vacants). Table 615 shows data on vacant dwellings, with information up to 2021 currently available. They can also be contacted at housing.statistics@communities.gov.uk.

The National Records for Scotland publishes data for Scotland in their Estimates of Households and Dwellings in Scotland, 2020 | National Records of Scotland (nrscotland.gov.uk). They can be contacted for further information at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk.

The Welsh government publishes their data in their Dwelling stock estimates: as at 31 March 2020 | GOV.WALES. They can be contacted at stats.housing@gov.wales.

The Northern Ireland Housing Executive published the number of vacant homes as part of their Housing Condition Survey. They can be contacted at nihcs@nihe.gov.uk for more information.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Housing Analysis Team directly on better.info@ons.gov.uk.
