You asked

What percentage of the UK population is transgender ?

We said

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding data on the UK transgender population held by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Unfortunately, we do not hold a figure for the transgender population in the UK as a whole.

However, a question on gender identity was asked in the England and Wales Census 2021. This data will be first published in a topic summary, due in the next few months. This will be followed by a series of analytical articles on gender identity, which will be released throughout 2023.  The release schedule can be found here Release calendar - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk).

A question on transgender status was asked in the Scottish Census 2022. Data from the Scottish Census will be published from 2023 onwards. However, topic specific release plans will be released in the future. If you have any questions about Scottish Census data, please contact National Records Scotland (NRS) at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk.

There was no question on gender identity in the Northern Irish Census 2021. If you have any queries about the NI Census, please contact the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) at info@nisra.gov.uk.
