We said

ONS have produced excess death statistics for England and Wales, please see Excess deaths in England and Wales which includes data from March 2020 to June 2022. We have not yet completed analysis up to October 2022 due to data availability. Excess deaths are calculated as the total monthly deaths 2020 from all causes minus the 2015 to 2019 five-year average for the corresponding week.

This dataset provides the number of excess deaths by month in table 1a. The earliest data point for these statistics is March 2022, where we began producing these figures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This data table provides a time series but does not provide an age breakdown. Total excess deaths breakdown for the age groups is available in table 2a, but does provide monthly breakdowns. These data record all excess deaths by age, registered in England and Wales between March 2020 and June 2022. We have not produced analysis of excess deaths compared to the five-year average specifically by month.

We do have a weekly analysis for a specific period: Weekly provisional excess deaths 2020 for regions in England and Wales.

In addition to this, we have the following user requested datasets available on the ONS website.

If this does not meet your needs, we may be able to produce this for you as a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).

Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
