Please could you provide information on:

  • The amount generated by the coffee industry annually in the UK economy for years: 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022

  • The amount generated by the cafe/restaurant industry annually in the UK economy for years: 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022

  • What percentage has the cafe/restaurant industry contributed in the overall UK economy for years: 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022

The Annual Business Survey (ABS) can provide some information that is relevant to this request but will not answer the request fully. I have provided relevant ABS data estimates in total for the coffee industry 2018 to 2020. These totals are made up of:

  • Processing of tea and coffee 2018 to 2020 (SIC 1083)

  • Retail Sale of beverages in specialised stores (not for consumption on premises) 2018 to 2020 (SIC 4725)

  • Wholesale of coffee, tea, cocoa, and spices (SIC 4637) 2018 to 2020

For the amount generated by the café/restaurant industry I have included relevant ABS data estimates 2018 to 2020 which consists of:

  • Restaurants and mobile food service activities (SIC 5610) 2018 to 2020

I have also included the UK total for all data covered by the Annual Business Survey (ABS) 2018 to 20201.

At present data is only available up until 2020. 2021 analysis is ongoing and due to be published in Summer 2023.
