FOI REF: FOI/2023/4841

You asked

I would like to know the number of assaults per 100,000 persons that are perpetrated by each ethnic group. I would like illegal immigrants to be classed as a single ethnic group.

I would also like to know the incidence of sexual assault and trafficking by each group proportionally, again with illegal immigrants classed as one group.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Our publications and data concern crime as it is experienced by victims, or as it is recorded by police, we do not hold information about the ethnicity of the perpetrators of crime.

You can find Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) data broken down by ethnicity in the article: Sexual offences victim characteristics, England and Wales: year ending March 2020.

This data is also found in Table 5: Percentage of adults aged 16 to 74 who were victims of sexual assault in the last year, by personal characteristics and sex, year ending March 2018 to year ending March 2020 CSEW combined, in the Tables: Sexual offences prevalence and victim characteristics, England and Wales. We do not produce this data as a rate per population.

Police recorded sexual offences and modern slavery figures (which includes trafficking for sexual exploitation) can be found in Table A4 of the Appendix tables, which we release alongside our quarterly Crime in England and Wales publication. The Home Office are responsible for the data and may be able to help you further, they can be contacted by email: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

You may also find some useful information on the Ethnicity facts and figures web site (Crime, justice and the law section).

Unfortunately, we do not, generally, produce statistics, or details on the offender.

However, we have published some data on ethnicity of defendants and offenders of sexual offences for year ending December 2017 as part of the 2018 'Sexual offending: victimisation and the path through the criminal justice system' release within the Ministry of Justice appendix tables.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) are primarily responsible for collating data on offenders and may be best placed to assist you further. They publish Statistics each quarter which may be of help and you might be able to gain some of the information you are looking for by using the MoJ's Outcomes by Offence data tool:June 2022 which can be filtered by offence group and ethnicity of the perpetrator.

Should you need any additional assistance or any queries regarding their data, the MoJ can be contacted via ESD@justice.gov.uk.

As mentioned above, we do not calculate rate per population. However if you wanted to do this yourself, we do publish population estimates by ethnic group, which was last published in December 2021.
