FOI REF: FOI/2023/4883

You asked

I would like to request:

The full, raw, un-adjusted data on deaths in the UK by vaccination status since May 2022 to the present date (or to the most recent date of collection).

The above information, age- and sex-stratified, showing data for no vaccination, 1 dose, 2 doses, and 3+ doses.

An explanation of why the ONS has ceased releasing the above information since May 2022, particularly as it presents an extremely important metric to be tracking.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We are unable to release the raw data requested. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence for the us to release personal information collected for statistical purposes. Personal information is any information held by the Statistics Board that would identify a body corporate or an individual, including those who are deceased. As disclosure is prohibited by another enactment, this information is exempt from release under Section 44(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).

Whilst we can provide bespoke requests for data, we are required to undertake disclosure control methods to ensure the level of information released, for example date of death, date of registration, single year of age, cause, and geography would not identify the deceased.

More information can be found in our Policy on protecting confidentiality in tables of birth and death statistics and in the Code of Practice for Statistics

We do have a pathway for Accredited Researchers to access unpublished de-identified data through our Secure Research Service.

We have released an update to the bulletin which was published on 21 February 2023. Deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status, Englandand subsequent dataset. This analysis looks at deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19), non-COVID-19 deaths and all deaths by vaccination status, broken down by age group. The data are for England only. Vaccinations data for Wales is not yet available to be linked to the mortality dataset and the Public Health Data Asset (PHDA) which covers England only. This publication was paused to allow the use of Census 2021 data.  The previous publications used Census 2011 data. This only covers 79% of the population because the rates are derived for the cohort of people enumerated at 2011 Census who were registered with a GP (General Practitioner) at the beginning of the pandemic and who were alive at the beginning of the month of interest.
