I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 regarding the number of suicides among health professionals and health-related occupations in England, for deaths registered from 2018 to 2023.
Specifically, I would like to request the following information:
- The number of suicides for each year from 2018 to 2023 among health professionals and health-related occupations in England and Wales.
- For each suicide, the following information:
- The name of the hospital or establishment where the health professional worked at the time of death.
- The credentials and medical specialty of the health professional.
- The years of work experience of the health professional.
- The race, gender, and mode of suicide of the health professional.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for deaths registered in England and Wales. Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. Details on ethnicity, credentials, years of work and place of work are not available on the death certificate, so we do not hold that information.
We have published this user requested data showing the number of suicides of health professionals in England for deaths registered between 2011 and 2021.
Further information would need to be created as a custom output via our bespoke services route, including additional data for 2022 and 2023 along with a breakdown of the mode of suicide at sub-major occupation. This along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, in line with our Charing Policy.)
