We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

2020 Mortality Stats:

The following publication, Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional (bulletin), and its accompanying dataset, Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional (dataset), provides information on deaths registered weekly by age, all causes (grouped), respiratory illness, and COVID-19.

More information regarding influenza and pneumonia deaths up to August 2020 can be found in the following publication: Deaths due to coronavirus compared with deaths from influenza and pneumonia in England and Wales.

The following dataset, Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales, provides provisional death registration data for England and Wales, broken down by sex, age and country. This includes deaths due to COVID-19 and leading causes of death. Data is available for July, August and September. October will be published on 19 November 2020.

You may also find the following publication useful, as this provides a breakdown of COVID-19 deaths by pre-existing condition: Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales. The latest data available is to June 2020, as this publication has been now been paused.

In order to provide any further information showing all causes of deaths with underlying health conditions from March 2020 to October 2020, we would be required to create analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

Deaths in 2020 by ethnicity:

Our mortality statistics are derived by information on death certificates. Unfortunately, ethnicity is not recorded on the death certificate or as part of the death registration process. Therefore, we do not hold information on the ethnicity of all those who have died during 2020.

The following publication, Updating ethnic contrasts in deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19), England and Wales: deaths occurring 2 March to 28 July 2020, was produced in response to COVID-19 and is a data linkage project with Census 2011 data. We are working on a general paper on ethnic disparities in mortality in the pre-Covid-19 timeframe. This is provisionally scheduled for release in January 2021.

2020 suicides:

Please see the following publication, with finalised suicide data: Suicides in the UK. This publication shows suicide data broken down by sex, age, area of usual residence, and suicide method. This is our most up-to-date annual publication, with deaths registered up to 2019.

We currently only hold the following provisional suicide data for deaths registered in 2020: Quarterly suicide death registrations in England: 2011 to 2019 and Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 of 2020 (provisional). Section two of this publication shows provisional suicide data for England with the most recent update including deaths that have been registered from January to June of 2020. The publication explains that the majority of suicides require an inquest, where a coroner must investigate the cause of death. The amount of time taken to hold an inquest causes a lag between the date the death occurred and the date the death is registered. We refer to this as a registration delay and registration delays for deaths caused by suicide tend to be five to six months on average. Because our data is based on death registrations, this delay means that most deaths recorded for 2020 so far would have occurred in 2019. More detailed information can be found in the publication.

Death registrations for 2020 will be finalised and released around early next year.

Information on homicides related to domestic abuse are published annually as part of the release Homicide in England and Wales. The latest figures can be found in tables 10a and 10b of the accompanying Appendix tables: homicide in England and Wales. These tables show the number of offences currently recorded as homicide for all victims, by relationship of victim to principal suspect and sex of victim, year ending March 2009 to year ending March 2019. Homicides are recorded to be "domestic" when the relationship between a victim aged 16 years and over and the perpetrator falls into one of the following categories in this table. "Parent", "Partner/ex-partner" and "Other family". For the year ending March 2019, there were 130 domestic homicides in England and Wales.

Quarterly information on homicides are also published in the Crime in England and Wales: Quarterly data tables, table QT1 provides the latest figure. Homicides includes the offences, "Murder", "Manslaughter", "Corporate manslaughter" and "Infanticide". For the period April to June 2020 there were 171 homicides in England and Wales.

The Home Office collect and hold the police recorded crime data and therefore may be able to better answer your query. They can be contacted via email at crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gov.uk.
