'The following publication, Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional, provides the latest data available for the week ending 1 January 2021 (week 53). This publication confirms that there have been 614,114 deaths registered in England and Wales in 2020.'

When will the confirmed data, i.e not provisional data, for deaths from all causes be published on the ONS website?

When will tables and graphs showing deaths from all causes 2000 to 2020 (not the provisional figure, the final figure for publication on the ONS website) be available?

Thank you for your request.

There is no confirmed publishing date for finalised 2020 mortality data. However, it is expected to be available in summer 2021, following any late registration delays due to inquests etc. A confirmed release date will be updated via the ONS release calendar.

Annual data for 2020 will be published in the deaths registered series and nomis. The DR series contains analysis around leading causes and various breakdowns by age and rates. Nomis is an explorable data published by ONS where you can interrogate the statistics yourself, this facility has a greater breakdown of underlying cause groups.

When we publish the DR series for 2020, we also provide a bulletin which summarises some of the key findings from the analysis. This bulletin often contains infographics which are used to compare the current year statistics to previous years. Here is a link to our latest bulletin for Deaths registered in England and Wales: 2019.
