The UK Gov website https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths  stipulates a total of 148,125 Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate as of March 24th 2021, of which England accounts for 128,507 and Wales 7,731.

At this address the ONS Gov website, the Covid latest insights page, under the subheading "The majority of deaths involving COVID-19 were in people aged 75 years and over in the latest week" you provide data for Number of deaths registered by week and age group, 28 December 2019 to 12 March 2021, England and Wales. The total deaths from the data in the xcel sheet is 56,782.

Thank you for your request.

The mortality data published by ONS are derived from the formal process of death registration and covers England and Wales. For Scotland and Northern Ireland statistics please contact National Records Scotland (NRS) and NISRA respectively.

Disparity in Numbers:

We have tried to replicate your calculations using the second link provided but we have not been able to so. We have however established that the total number of 148,125 was based on information provided by the ONS, NRS and NISRA covering the pandemic period up to 12 March 2021. The cumulative total for the same period based on data published by the ONS is 149,715 deaths. A difference of 1,590 deaths. This difference is due to differences in methodology, which leads to the ONS data being published later thereby having more deaths.

How do we define deaths involving COVID-19:

Any death which has COVID-19 mentioned on the death certificate is included in our 'deaths involving COVID-19' counts.

Provide data of hospital admissions for COVID-19 by each 1 year of age:

Provide data of positive test results for COVID- 19 by each 1 year of age:

The COVID-19 Infection Survey (CIS) is a representative household survey which estimates the number of people testing positive for COVID-19. Our statistics refer to infections reported in the community, by which we mean private households. These figures exclude infections reported in hospitals, care homes or other institutional settings.

You can find the modelled estimates of daily rates of the percentage of the population testing positive for COVID-19 by single year of age in the dataset accompanying our latest bulletin:

  • In England on tab 1h
  • In Wales on tab 3e
  • In Northern Ireland on tab 4e
  • In Scotland on tab 5e
