Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Deaths involving COVID-19 vaccination

You can find the number of deaths involving COVID-19 (not restricted to 28 days or first or second vaccination) in table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset, these include figures for deaths involving adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination. There are currently 3 deaths registered with the aligning ICD codes for this. However, should this change, they will be updated in this table. This publication is due to be updated in July 2021.

Deaths involving Vaccines 2019-2018

ONS mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Using the NOMIS webservice, I can provide you with annual deaths due to Vaccines (ICD-10 code Y58 to Y59) for 2013-2019 for England and Wales.

2020 data will be available for this service after the publication of the Deaths Registered Series in July 2021.

If this does not meet your needs, we may be able to create a custom output. Information on deaths by specific ICD-10 code along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).

Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Adverse reactions to vaccines

ONS Data is derived from information collected from the death certificate. We do not have access to adverse reactions to vaccinations and therefore consider this information not held.
