Thank you for your request.

The face-to-face Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) was suspended on 17 March 2020 because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It was temporarily replaced with the Telephone-operated Crime Survey for England and Wales (TCSEW). The TCSEW was specifically designed to continue measuring crime during this period.

Concerns around confidentiality and respondent safeguarding led to domestic abuse questions being excluded from the survey specifically those relating to domestic abuse. As a result, estimates are not held in the TCSEW in relation to the preferred measure of domestic abuse and domestic violence.

However, you may find our publication on Domestic abuse in England and Wales: November 2021 helpful. Included in this are police recorded domestic abuse-related crimes, government data from the criminal justice system and data from services available to victims of domestic abuse in England and Wales. The analysis presented in this release should be treated with caution as, without the CSEW estimates, we cannot present data in its entirety, particularly the prevalence and characteristics of victims who do not report domestic abuse or seek support. You can find the data from police recorded crime in the Domestic abuse prevalence and victim characteristics dataset.

You may also find our publication on Domestic abuse during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic useful. It brings together indicators from a range of data sources to assess the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on domestic abuse in England and Wales.
