You asked

Please provide Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis data for 2022 (as it would be less influenced by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic) and may give a more up to date representative of what is happening since 2016?

Thank you for your request.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

  • the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death

or

  • the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The ICD-10 cause code for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is J84.1.

The number of deaths registered in England and Wales for 2022 where the underlying cause of death was recorded as J84.1 was 4,500.
