Please can you confirm if you hold the number of UK cases of influenza infection for each of the following flu seasons:

  • 2017/2018
  • 2018/2019
  • 2019/2020
  • 2020/2021

If you have this, please provide the number of cases by each of the years shown above.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data regarding influenza for England and Wales. Public Health England (PHE) publishes overviews each year of influenza surveillance results for the winter periods you require. These reports are available via the following link: Annual flu reports. If you have any questions regarding these figures, please contact PHE at enquiries@phe.gov.uk.

The numbers of deaths from influenza for England and Wales can be obtained via NOMIS for calendar years 2013 to 2019.  Influenza can be identified using the underlying cause of death ICD-10 codes: J09-J11.

Please see the following instructions for using this service:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority)

  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands

  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

The number of weekly deaths for influenza and pneumonia combined (ICD-10 codes J09-J18) for England and Wales, 2020/21 are published in the latest weekly death publication, which can be accessed via the following link: Provisional weekly deaths publication.
