​Please supply the number of deaths under the ICD-10 code rifle shotgun larger firearm discharge between 2001 and 2020.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry regarding deaths involving rifles or shotguns in England and Wales from 2001 to 2020.

The underlying cause of death is coded using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The following ICD-10 codes would be used for gun deaths for 2001 onwards. The latest data available is for 2020.

Data for 2001 to 2020 is available via the following link: 21st Century Mortality files - deaths dataset, England, and Wales. Whilst in the spreadsheet, you could use the CTRL+F function to search for the relevant codes for each year.

From 2013 to 2020, this information is available on our NOMIS webservice. Please see the following instructions for this service:

In the search bar, type mortality data and click enter.

  • Select Mortality Statistics – Underlying cause and age

  • Start new query manually

  • Select Geography, choose Countries ALL for England and Wales including non-residents.

  • Click Date and tick required dates or ALL for 2013-2020 range.

  • Age disaggregation is available if required.

  • NOMIS automatically selects number of deaths if you require rates please tick this manually.

  • NOMIS automatically selects Total r choose required disaggregation for male/Female.

  • Underlying cause – In the search bar type in W33 and tick box. Repeat for X73, X94 and Y23. Or select ICD10 list and expand W, X and Y codes and select manually.

  • Click format if you require CSV download, if you require Excel format you do not need to follow this step.

  • Click Download the data.

If this does not meet your needs, we may be able to create a custom output. Information on deaths by specific IC9/ICD10 code for England and Wales, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
