Please confirm if ONS class those who have not yet received their third covid jab (booster) are classed as unvaccinated.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

For our publications on Deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status, England, "unvaccinated" means has never received any dose of a COVID-19 vaccination. We define the vaccination statuses according to the number of doses received and, where numbers allow, the time since the dose.

These currently are:

  • unvaccinated
  • received only the first dose, less than 21 days ago
  • received only the first dose, at least 21 days ago
  • received the second dose, less than 21 days ago
  • received the second dose, at least 21 days ago

Future updates of the publication will include a category for booster vaccines, split by time since booster vaccine if numbers allow. The definition of "unvaccinated" will not change.

We do not hold information on number of COVID-19 patients or patients in ICU with COVID-19 by vaccination status. The UK Health Security Agency may be better placed to answer queries relating to hospitalisations as they publish numbers and rates for COVID-19 cases presenting to emergency care (within 28 days of a positive specimen) resulting in an overnight inpatient admission, by vaccination status, in their COVID-19 vaccine surveillance reports.
