You asked

Please supply the following information:

  1. What requirements a religion has to meet in order to maintain its legal registration
  2. Records going back (as far back as they are held up to the present) showing how much money religions have received from the government - ideally broken down by religion. This would include, but not be limited to, gift-aid and financial support for maintenance of religious buildings.

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request.

Unfortunately, we are not able to answer your questions as we do not hold any information on the legal registration of religions, nor do we hold information about money religions receive from government.

For our data collection, 'legal registration' is not a factor in the framing of questions on Religion. Religion can encompass different concepts including affiliation, belief, or practice. The Government Statistical Service's 'Religion harmonised standard' recommends that religious affiliation is the concept used for data collected on religion in the UK. Religious affiliation is a measure of how a person connects or identifies with a religion, regardless of their beliefs or active religious practice.
