FOI REF: FOI/2023/5103

You asked

Under the Freedom of Information Request Act, I would like to request the following information:

  • The number of bike thefts in each city in the UK, using the most recent year data set on record

  • The number of bike thefts in each region in the UK, using the most recent year data set on record

We said

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we do not hold bicycle theft statistics broken down by region or city.

The smallest geographical level at which we publish data is at the Community Safety Partnership (CSP) level. CSPs equate, in the majority of instances, to local authorities.

You will find data on bicycle theft at the CSP level in our CSP tables. They are updated quarterly, and the most recent tables are for year ending December 2022. Table C2 provides the number of police recorded crimes for headline offences including bicycle theft (column V).

You can also find the latest police recorded crime bicycle theft data by Police Force Area (PFA) in Crime in England and Wales: Police Force Area data tables in table P1, column R. However, PFAs are a wider geographical level than CSPs.

If you have any further questions, please email us at crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
