You asked

Please can I ask how many people died at Wrightington Wigan and Leigh from January 2019 to December 2019 and again in comparison January 2020 to December 2020.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We publish weekly numbers of deaths by local authority in England and Wales for 2020 and 2021 in our Provisional weekly deaths publication.

Numbers of weekly deaths by local authority for 2015 to 2019 are available here: Death registrations and five year average weekly deaths by local authority and place of occurrence, England and Wales: 2015 to 2019

You can obtain the total annual deaths by local authority for the period 2013 to 2019 for England and Wales via NOMIS.

If you require data at a geographic area smaller than local authority, NOMIS provides death registrations by middle layer super output area (MSOA) for 2013 to 2019.

Please see the following instructions for using our NOMIS service:

Select the geography (England and Wales, regional, by local authority, by MSOA)

Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands

Select Gender - Total or Male/Female

Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example

Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)

Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

2020 and 2021 COVID-19 mortality data at MSOA level can be found here: Deaths due to COVID-19 - Interactive map

We also have the following ad hoc tables available for 2019 annual death registrations:

Death registrations by age group, local authority and ward, England, 2019

Deaths registrations by postcode sector, England and Wales, 2019

Further analysis on deaths by small geographical area in 2019 and 2020 would need to be created as bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

However, special extracts and tabulations of finalised mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs).  This does not apply to 2020 data as it still provisional.  2020 data will be available on request after death registrations are finalised in July 2021. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contacthealth.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
