1. Main points
Our provisional estimate of the population of the UK on 30 June 2025 is 69.5 million people (69,487,000).
This estimate is provisional, and is based on published estimates for births, deaths and international migration.
Estimated long-term net migration was 204,000, while there were an estimated 653,000 births and 651,000 deaths in the year ending 30 June 2025.
This provisional estimate of the UK population is not available by subnational area, age or sex.
We aim to publish mid-2025 UK population estimates for local authorities by single year of age and sex in summer 2026.
2. Data sources and quality
Our provisional UK population estimate has been calculated using published data, including:
our UK population estimate for mid-2024 (69,281,000 people)
our provisional estimates of long-term international migration for year ending (YE) June 2025
birth registrations for YE 30 June 2025, with provisional data from 1 January to 30 June 2025
death registrations for YE 30 June 2025
Our provisional mid-2025 population estimate provides a timelier and more accurate estimate than is available from population projections for mid-2025. It can be used when an up-to-date estimate is needed for per capita indicators, such as gross domestic product (GDP) per head. However, it should not be used for comparisons with estimates for smaller geographic areas in previous years. Subnational survey weights should continue to use the existing subnational population estimates and projections.
We aim to publish mid-2025 population estimates in summer 2026. These will include:
international migration estimates updated with the latest and most complete data
official estimates of international migration for Northern Ireland
adjustments to the number of deaths, by date of occurrence, to account for late registrations
more complete data on births; the birth estimates used in this release are based on provisional data from 1 January to 30 June 2025
changes in the number of home and foreign armed forces personnel for YE 30 June 2025
revisions to mid-year estimates for mid-2022 to mid-2024 reflecting the latest long-term international estimates.
More quality and methodology information (QMI) on strengths, limitations, appropriate uses, and how the data were created is available in our Mid-year population estimates QMI.
