Dataset(s): Travel trends estimates: UK residents' visits abroad

Annual estimates of visits and spending by UK residents abroad. Also includes data on nights, purpose, main country visited and mode of travel. Breakdowns by length of stay and nationality are covered. In 2019, new methods were introduced for this dataset. The 2009 to 2019 edition supersedes all previous time series editions of this dataset. We advise against using all editions listed before the 2019 edition.

Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

Due to a processing error, a minor correction has been made to Table 3.05: Average spending in £ per visit and per day by region of visit and purpose of visit and Table 3.12: Average spending in £ per visit abroad and per day by main country visited. This correction was made for years 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. We have also corrected an error in the 2019 to 2023 edition of the ‘Travel trends estimates: UK residents’ visits abroad’ dataset. The incorrect dataset was supplied in October 2024. This occurred due to human error, where an updated version of the 2023 edition incorrectly replaced the previous 2019 to 2023 dataset. This has now been corrected. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Correction See correction
We have corrected an error in the column titles of Table 5.11 where ‘All Purpose Nationality of Residence and ‘All Purposes Nationality UK’ were incorrectly swapped.
