People are living longer. Improved working conditions, reduced smoking rates and improved healthcare have all contributed to increasing life expectancy from generation to generation.

Use our interactive calculator to find out average life expectancy and the likelihood of living to be aged 100 years for someone of your age and sex, given assumed future mortality improvements.

This is average cohort life expectancy which does not consider other factors that may affect life expectancy such as lifestyle or health conditions.

The life expectancy calculator is available for ages 0 to 100 years. Expectations of life at the oldest ages are highly uncertain and have not been included in the life expectancy calculator or accompanying data tables.

The average life expectancy values are age as at last birthday. For example, if the average life expectancy was 87.95 years, the age provided by the life expectancy calculator would be 87 years.

We have recently changed the headline measures presented in the life expectancy calculator to reduce the amount of rounding involved and increase the accuracy of the information provided. If you have any feedback on these changes, please contact pop.info@ons.gov.uk.

Additional data on the chances of living to different ages are available in our Life tables, principal projection, UK dataset by selecting "Cohort", the age of interest and the current year from the drop-down menus. Data are also available for England and Wales in our Life tables, principal projection, England and Wales dataset.
