Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

A small error occurred in the deaths by single year of age tables UK, 2014 and 2015 due to a processing error. We have corrected this error. You can see all previous versions of this data on the previous versions page. We apologise for any inconvenience. The original date of publication was 15 July 2015 and the figures were corrected on 16 February 2017 at 4:00pm.

Important notes and usage information

  • death statistics are compiled from information supplied when deaths are certified and registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement

  • figures represent the number of deaths registered in the calendar year

  • figures represent deaths which occurred in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, these include the deaths of individuals whose usual residence was outside of the specific country

  • United Kingdom deaths include aggregated deaths registered in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
