The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is consolidating Newport’s role as the hub for economic statistics by recruiting 30 new Economic Researchers who will play a key role in developing economic statistics that will better measure the UK's changing economy.
The news comes after an interim report from Sir Charles Bean recommended that the “home of economic statistics should remain and be strengthened in Newport,” adding “ONS should concentrate on building up the long-term capability of its Newport site.”
The new economists, the majority of whom will be based in Newport, will bolster ONS's existing economic analysis team and will give the organisation greater capacity to provide key insights for policymakers. They will be one instalment in an ongoing programme to boost ONS’s economic capability.
Chief Economist Joe Grice said: “Increased Economic Capability is central to ONS’s ability to function as a world class statistical office.
“Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on key economic indicators that are vital to our national life. With an ever-increasing demand for information, our economic statistics are more important than ever before.”
The deadline for applications is Sunday 3 April 2016. Candidates must have achieved, or be expected to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree in Economics or a relevant Masters level qualification.
