1. Introduction

We suspended publication of our regular bulletins for monthly Producer Price Indices (PPI) and quarterly Services Producer Price Indices (SPPI) in March 2025, as explained in our Producer Prices publications update statement. The accredited official statistics status of PPI and SPPI has since been temporarily suspended.

We acknowledged how users value our Producer Price Index (PPI) and Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) statistics being in the public domain to inform policy and decision-making. Therefore, we published the first edition of this article in July 2025, updating users on the progress towards resuming the regular publication of our PPI and SPPI bulletins and datasets. We also published an indicative dataset, consisting of growth rates for selected PPIs and SPPIs for the periods between December 2019 and April 2025.

This article and the accompanying dataset are updates to our last editions. The dataset accompanying this article includes growth rates and index values for the periods between January 2015 and June 2025. The expansion of the periods covered and the inclusion of index values in this dataset are in response to feedback on our previous publication. It also provides greater transparency around some of the main inputs being used in our gross domestic product (GDP), UK trade and construction statistics. Users should be aware that the methodological basis that these results are published on is the same as the previous indicative dataset publication; they are both subject to further revisions. This is while we continue to implement the necessary methodological corrections in our processing system and sufficiently quality assure the outputs.

In the previous edition of this article, we further explain the methods improvements to produce these indicative results. You can also find a summary in Section 2: Methods of this article.

These data are consistent with the inputs used to derive chained volume measures published in our GDP, UK trade and construction statistics. The full implementation of historical data is being managed in line with the national accounts revision policy. Although, the impact of further changes to PPI and SPPI on the published estimates of headline GDP growth for 2025 is expected to be negligible.

2. Methods

The results in the indicative dataset accompanying the previous edition of this article were correct regarding errors applying the chain-linking methodology. This is also true for the latest edition of the dataset accompanying this edition of the article. However, as was the case with the previous edition of this article, the results are still subject to further corrections. Specifically, these are corrections to the calculation of component weights using index values that were affected by the errors in applying chain-linking in our processing system.

We expect the revisions and corrections to weights to be small. However, users should be aware that testing work continues. Further details on the errors in Producer Price Indices (PPI) and Services Producer Price Indices (SPPI) that we are correcting can be found in our Producer Prices publications update statement.

This article's accompanying dataset contains monthly index values, and monthly and annual growth rates from January 2015 to June 2025 for a selection of important series, including headline output and input PPI. These data are not accredited official statistics and should be used with caution, reflecting the ongoing work to implement corrections and improvements to our processing system.

3. Main points

  • Producer input prices fell by 1.0% in the year to June 2025, compared with a revised fall of 1.2% in the year to April 2025.

  • Producer output (factory gate) prices rose by 1.9% in the year to June 2025, up from a revised rise of 0.7% in the year to April 2025.

  • Services producer prices rose by 2.1% in the year to Quarter 2 (Apr to June) 2025, down from an increase of 2.5% in the year to Quarter 1 (Jan to Mar) 2025.

  • Inputs of crude oil and natural gas, and outputs of coke and refined petroleum provided the largest contributions to the input and output Producer Price Indices (PPI) annual inflation rates respectively; these indices fell by 24.1% and 18.8% respectively in the year to June 2025.

  • Administrative and support services provided the largest contribution to the annual inflation rate for Services Producer Price Indices (SPPI) in the year to Quarter 2 2025; however, accommodation and food services provided the largest contribution to the change in the annual rate between Quarter 1 2025 and Quarter 2 2025, prices for these services rose by 5.0% and 2.2% respectively in the year to Quarter 2 2025.

  • The impact of the chain-linking corrections on headline PPI and SPPI is in line with the initial expectation set out in our Producer Prices publications statement; however, as noted previously, the effects vary for different products and industries.

4. Future developments

We intend to resume full publication of our monthly Producer Price Indices (PPI) and quarterly Services Producer Price Indices (SPPI) bulletins in October 2025. This pause reflects the need for a substantial rebuild of the processing system and for the time needed to sufficiently quality assure the outputs. So far, the development work is progressing well.

We will continue to keep users updated on future publication plans. There is additional work to undertake, which will result in further corrections to the results published in this article. However, we will publish a more detailed impact analysis when we resume our regular monthly publication.

We welcome feedback on these indicative data by email to business.prices@ons.gov.uk.
