Borrowing rose by around a fifth compared with August 2025, as spending increased more than government income from taxes and other receipts, partly reflecting the impacts of inflation.
Borrowing in the financial year (FY) to August 2026 was below the same period last year, but higher than the official government forecast.
Debt remained just below £3 trillion at end of August 2026, although as a share of the economy it was lower than a year earlier.
