Public sector borrowing was slightly higher in July 2026 compared with a year earlier. This is because increased spending on public services, benefits and other costs more than offset growth in receipts, despite record self-assessed (SA) income tax receipts in July 2026.
Borrowing in the financial year (FY) to July 2026 was below the same period last year, but higher than government expectation.
Debt remained just below £3 trillion at end of July 2026, although debt as a share of the economy was lower than a year earlier.
