Public sector borrowing fell by 33% in June 2026 compared with a year earlier, as receipts rose while expenditure decreased slightly, largely because of lower inflation-linked debt interest costs.
Borrowing in financial year (FY) to June 2026 was the 10th highest April to June period since comparable monthly records began in 1993.
Debt remained high by historical standards, with public sector net debt close to the annual value of UK gross domestic product (GDP), which is the annual value of everything produced in the UK economy.
