Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

Correction See correction
As previously announced on 18 August 2025, an error was identified with some indices in the dataset 'Public service productivity estimates: total public service (2020 edition)'. In this previous publication, reference indices were not correctly rebased to 1997. The error was because of human error and was initially identified by a user reviewing adult social care data. On reviewing the whole dataset, we found that adult social care estimates in Tables 4 and 6 and all service areas in Table 5 were affected. We have now corrected the 2020 version of the dataset. We apologise for this correction. In general, we strongly recommend referring to the most recent data publications, as the most up-to-date and accurate information. If you require specific advice on which datasets to use, please contact psp@ons.gov.uk and we will be happy to assist.
