Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

Correction See correction
We have identified and corrected a minor error in Research Output: Economic activity, faster indicators, UK: October 2019 (22 November 2019). This error also impacts on September 2019 (24 October 2019) release. The error only affects the 2019 Q3 Expenditure YoY number of reporters indicator, and small (around 0.01) changes to the expenditure YoY industry sector indices. The headline YoY indices (total, agriculture, construction, production and services) were not affected. As a result of this, the commentary provided in the affected Research Output bulletin remains accurate. The values have now been corrected and the error fixed in this release.
