You asked
Could I ask that were there to be an election today, what would our current state of finances now be calculated to be?
We said
Thank you for your request.
We have produced the public sector finances figures for April 2025 and the latest public sector finances figures.
In our April publication we estimate that amount borrowed by the public sector in the financial year 2024/25 was £148.3 billion.
The Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR), who produce forecasts for the government fiscal statistics, estimated that the public sector borrowing would be £137.3 billion over the same period, in their latest Economic and Fiscal Outlook. This was £11.0 billion less than our current estimate.
The OBR’s publication - Table 6.1: Public sector net borrowing: changes since October - presents the latest borrowing forecasts (as at the March 2025 budget) and also provides the equivalent figures as at the October 2024 budget.
