Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to request the following information:

  1. The current number of fish and chip shops operating in the United Kingdom.

  2. Whether there is a specific classification or category used to identify “Fish & Chip Shops” (excluding general takeaway food outlets) in your records.

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request enquiring information on the number of Fish and Chip shops in the United Kingdom. 

Unfortunately, data held on the Inter-Departmental Business Register are only available as granular as 5-digit Standard Industrial Classification. The classification of Fish and Chip shops are grouped under SIC 56103: Take away food shops and mobile food stands.
