FOI reference: FOI-2025-2697
You asked
I am making this request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 regarding the market share of supermarket own-brand and branded products.
Please provide any data, reports, or statistics on the percentage of supermarket own-brand products versus branded products in major UK supermarket chains from 2010 to present.
Has the ONS tracked changes in the number of unique brands available in UK supermarkets from 2010 to 2024? If so, please provide available figures.
Does the ONS collect any data on the average shelf space allocated to own-brand versus branded products in UK supermarkets?
Please provide any economic impact reports or studies that assess how the growth of supermarket own-brands has affected competition, small suppliers, and food manufacturers.
If fulfilling this request in full exceeds cost limits, please prioritise the most recent 5 years of data (2019-2024).
We said
Thank you for your request.
Unfortunately, we don’t hold summary statistics on the percentage of supermarket own-brand products versus branded products or on the number of unique brands available in UK supermarkets as we would need to create new information to fulfil this request. For example, we would need to develop new data pipelines and carry out detailed statistical analysis on very large datasets. In particular we would need to manually classify our large datasets to distinguish between own brand and branded goods, which would take a number of weeks. Under FOIA we are not obliged to create new information to comply with a request. This information therefore is not held for the purposes of FOIA.
Unfortunately, we do not collect any data on the average shelf space allocate to own-brand versus branded products in UK supermarkets, and we do not hold any impact reports or studies that assess how the growth of supermarket own-brands has affected competition, small suppliers and food manufacturers.
