FOI reference: FOI-2025-2721
You asked
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to know:
- The number of individuals that benefit from workforce compensation programmes in the UK
- The number of individuals that benefit from workforce compensation programmes in the UK in the form of share options
- The different categories of workforce compensation programmes in the UK
I would like this information broken down for each of the past five years with a year-end of 31 December. If this year-end is not possible, please use whichever year-end is used internally.

Thank you for your enquiry relating to workforce compensation in the UK.
We routinely publish official accredited statistics on Average Household Income. This captures some employer-provided benefits at the household-level. These data are available on the ONS website and cover the financial year ending (FYE) 2015 to FYE 2023.
Specifically, income components within Table 14 capture employer provided benefits; (i) Bonuses and employer provided childcare/childcare vouchers are captured within 'Wages and Salaries' and (ii) Company provided cars and fuel for private uses, private medical insurance, rent and mortgages provided by or subsidised by the employer are captured within 'Imputed income from benefits in kind'. Please note values provided in this table are averaged across all UK households.
Data for FYE 2024 are scheduled for publication in May 2025. As this data will be published in the future, the exemption found udner Section 22 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
More specific breakdowns relating to employer provided benefit type, including household counts in receipt of said compensation scheme would need to be created, so are not held as defined by the FOI Act. However, this information is available to order via our bespoke services route. Such services are subject to legal frameworks, resources and agreement of costs, subject to our charging policy. If you would like to request bespoke datasets, please contact the household income and expenditure analysis team hie@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further.
